• Proto-expo
[Place du Mont-Blanc]
14/08—19/09 everyday from 11 AM to 6 PM
Admission fee: 3€
Place du Mont blanc,
74400 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
Exhibited for the second time since its conception at the Villa Medici in Rome, the Proto-Habitat is an innovative architectural structure. Reminiscent of Jean Prouvé and his demountable houses, the architects of Wald.City, Flavien Menu & Frédérique Barchelard, are rethinking the way we inhabit the world.
This ecological, nomadic and modular pavilion is transformed here into an ephemeral art center. It will host an exhibition, Inner Forest, presenting a selection of young international artists (Antoine Carbonne, Laetitia de Chocqueuse, Charlotte Gautier Van Tour, Ellande Jaureguiberry, Théo Massoulier).
The forest is a place outside space and time defined by men, a place on the fringes of the city and out of sight. Being initiatory, hostile or protective at the same time, the forest is a sacred space present in many stories. Since ancient times, its elements, and the mystery that emerges from them, have been a source of inspiration for men and artists. Between canopy and earth, roots, moss, stones, plants, fungi and animals, they form a whole system of life. Through smells, sounds and underground connections, these components communicate with each other, help each other and generate life. At the crossroads of the real and the imaginary, the spirit of the forest is embodied both in Liéchi in Slavic culture, and pictured as a deer-god in the Japanese imagination. The forest is often viewed by humans with an anthropomorphic eye, giving trees or stones human characteristics.
The exhibition explores the theme of the dream forest through the eyes of these contemporary artists.
• Wild billboards
[Parc Couttet]
14/08—19/09 everyday 24/24 (outdoor exhibition)
Admission fee: free
Parc Couttet,
84 Chemin de la Tournette,
74400 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
As part of the Artocene Festival, billboards are painted by the artist Paulina Michnowska. Her colorful and light compositions take up elements from the local flora and fauna, addressing the theme of vegetation from a dreamlike angle.
Paulina Michnowska creates visual allegories, often humorous, rooted in autobiographical anecdotes, historical folklore and the dullness of mundanity. She uses an assortment of images collected from books, photographs, newspaper clippings and ancient sculptural objects, which she selects, edits and merges in a language of her own. The artist uses a wide range of media which includes drawing, painting, ceramics and collage. Her main interest lies in the process itself, where she can physically explore different materials and their unique characteristics.
• There is another sky
[Médiathèque]
14/08—18/09 from Tuesday to Saturday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Admission fee: free
Mediathèque de Chamonix,
Route de la Patinoire,
74400 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
There is another sky presents a selection of paintings by artist Ariele Bacchetti. Reflecting Emily Disckinson's poem of the same title, the paintings depict lush vegetation. Devoid of any human presence, these dark landscapes look like indefinite spaces, where time stopped somewhere between day and night. The confusion of time like the confusion of forms - between plants and animals - is omnipresent. Through an atmosphere that is both reassuring and distressing, the exhibition reveals the strange side of the forest.
• Forest of drawings
[Majestic]
01/09—06/09 everyday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Admission fee: free
Le Majestic,
241 Allée du Majestic,
74400 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
The forest of your dreams
For this exhibition, all the children of the Chamonix valley were invited to respond to the theme of the enchanted forest.
Using watercolor, pencil, acrylic, collage or gouache, children adopt the materials of their choice to make drawings whilst letting their imagination take over.
A few hundred drawings will be exhibited throughout the Majestic's ballroom, creating a forest of drawings.
Presented as the housing of the future, the Proto Habitat is a nomadic, ecological and modular space created by the architect duo Frédérique Barchelard and Flavien Menu (Wald.City). Resulting from research in Residence at the Villa Medici in Rome, the Proto-Habitat is built mainly in wood. It can be assembled and dismantled in 5 days, without permanent basis. This modular habitat is in the vein of a “social” architecture, avant-garde architecture that places people and the environment at the center of its project. On the occasion of the Artocene festival, the Proto-Habitat will be exhibited at the entrance of the city and on the edge of the woods. It will then become an ephemeral art center for the Inner Forest exhibition.
Frédérique Barchelard is a state-certified architect (ENSAPLV) and designer. Her work focuses on how the architect can create new conditions for living together, articulating research and operationality, foresight and daily domesticity. She operates on metropolitan and urban scales but also on a more artisanal and artistic one. Her work is part of both the exploration of our daily living spaces and the creation of spaces, architectures or innovative real estate strategies. She teaches in London at the Architectural Association and London Metropolitan University.
Flavien Menu is a state-certified architect (ENSAV) and holder of a double degree in Urban Affairs at Sciences Po Paris / London School of Economics. He works at the crossroads of political, economic and architectural worlds by articulating the realities of the territories with the challenges of urban development (Office for Cities). He actively participates in the debates of ideas around questions of urban innovation and living together through numerous articles and conferences (Harvard Kennedy School, Architectural Association, Tate Modern). His first book, New Commons for Europe, is a dialogue on the spontaneous ways of “making” the city, which emerged after the financial crisis of 2008.
Antoine Carbonne
Laetitia de Chocqueuse
Antoine Carbonne (b. 1987 France; lives and works in Brussels)
Antoine Carbonne uses the images of his memory and his imagination to create vibrant works of color. Juxtaposing dream figures and forms of reality, the artist lets his instinct determine his sets of compositions.
For the exhibition, Inner Forest, the works take the viewer into a dreamlike universe where the space-time frame is not quite defined. The choice of the character at the center of the work allows us to bring out the loneliness and the way in which the forest can grab us, hypnotize us, until we get lost in it. Antoine Carbonne takes us to the forest as he imagines it: a scary place but also a place where we can disappear, hide, reinvent ourselves.
A graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, Antoine Carbonne's work has been exhibited at the Villa Noailles (Hyères), at the BCD workshop (Brussels), at the MuhKA (Anvers), auCd lt + (Liège,), at the Virginie Louvet gallery (Paris), and General Stores (Paris).
Laetitia de Chocqueuse (born in 1983 in France; lives and works between Paris and Zurich)
Through works forging links between ancient civilizations and the contemporary world, Laetitia de Chocqueuse questions the place of men in space (cosmos) and in time (History). Drawing on theories of lost knowledge, forgotten cultures and the most sophisticated current scientific research, she speculates on our relation to knowledge.
For the Inner Forest exhibition, Laetitia de Chocqueuse presents works focusing on the magnetic dimension of things, in relation to stones, acoustic levitation and the aura of images.
A graduate of Fine Arts in Paris, she also studied Decorative Arts in Paris and La Cambre in Brussels. Her work has been shown in several exhibitions in France and abroad, notably at the Contemporary Art Center Les Tanneries or as part of Speedy Wash (Wiels outside the walls). Laetitia de Chocqueuse was selected for the Salon de Montrouge, the Emerige Revelations Grant and the November painting prize in Vitry.
Charlotte Gautier van Tour
Charlotte Gautier Van Tour (b. 1989 France; lives and works in Marseille)
Chimerical and organic in appearance, Charlotte Gautier van Tour’s work reveals processes of mutation and links of micro-interdependence. Through her creative approach, she uses various biobased materials while being interested in the evolution of matter. Influenced among others by the Gaia hypothesis, Charlotte Gautier van Tour observes the interconnections between ancient living beings, strata of the earth and the living world, all species combined. Her interest in the appearance of water and its role as a connector between different environments - land and sea - often appears in her work.
As part of the Inner Forest exhibition, Charlotte Gautier van Tour focuses on the link that brings rivers, woods, and the sea together, with a particular reference to “The forest is longing for the sea” by Shigeatsu Hatakeyam. An installation designed for the exhibition takes up the myth of the dryads, these divine figures symbolizing feminism and the cult of trees.
Graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2014, Charlotte Gautier van Tour continued the Reflective Interaction research program at the Ensad Lab until 2017. Her work was recently the subject of exhibitions at the Chapel. XIV, at the La Source foundation, at the Villa Belleville and at the Cité des arts.
Ellande Jaureguiberry (b. 1985 France; lives and works in Paris)
From a repertoire of universal forms specific to nature and the cosmos, Ellande Jaureguiberry creates his works through a process of transfer, play of shadows, lights and colors. These works on paper are disconcerting with their sculptural aspect, testifying to the artist's interest in forms of language and communication. Geometric elements contrast with organic shapes, the interpretation of their compositions being up to the viewer.
For Inner Forest, the works of Ellande Jaureguiberry reveal his admiration for the Japanese culture in their approach to nature. The richness of the Japanese vocabulary to describe the forest as well as the seasons is transcribed in his compositions. For this exhibition, the artist will address the theme of the four seasons.
The work of Ellande Jaureguiberry has been the subject of personal exhibitions at the A.romy gallery (Geneva, CH), Esadhar (Rouen), Galerie Le Second Jeudi (Bayonne). His work was recently presented at NADA de Miamietaue Salon de Montrouge (Paris). He is currently in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris) and will soon participate in a group exhibition at the POUSH Manifesto (Paris).
Théo Massoulier (b. 1983 France; lives and works in Lyon)
Théo Massoulier's work revolves around mineral, biological and artificial forms. Often zoomorphic in appearance, his work presents several series of hybrid creatures evolving over time. The use of waste produced by men and by nature is at the center of his practice. Through his meticulous sculptures, the artist evokes the different stages of metamorphosis. In this way, the artist highlights the scarcity of materials and space.
For the Inner Forest exhibition, several pieces from the CriSpr and 5G series will be presented, putting into perspective the fantastic potential of the forest. Based on the notion of entropy, his research echoes transformations in the field of the microscopic.
Théo Massoulier's work was presented for the first time in 2016 at the Youth Art Biennale of Fortezza (Italy) and at the Hyper pavilion of the Venice Biennale. In 2018, he exhibited solo at the Angle (La Roche sur Foron) as part of the Nomadic Galleries, a device supported by the IAC (Villeurbanne), as well as at the Insa Humanities Center (Lyon) and at the Bastille art center (Grenoble). After exhibiting at the Biennale de Lyon (2019), he presents a personal exhibition at the Kashagan project room (Lyon). His work was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Les Quinconces art center (Le Mans).
Paulina Michnowska (b. 1984 Italy; lives and works in London)
Drawing inspiration from everyday objects and situations, his work often reveals the dark thoughts that permeate our mundane existence. Michnowska uses a wide range of media which includes drawing, painting, ceramics and collage. Her main interest lies in the process itself, where she can physically explore different materials and their unique characteristics.
Through the Wild Billboards exhibition as part of the Artocene festival, the artist composes scenes of local flora and fauna between humor and fantasy.
Paulina Michnowska's work has been exhibited at the CASS Sculpture Foundation (UK), Attic (Brussels, Belgium), Marian Cramer Art Center (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and Saatchi Gallery (London UK). -United).
Ariele Bacchetti grew up in a village surrounded by forests. As a child, he experienced a close contact to nature. Currently based in Venice, Bacchetti’s mental images are still deeply influenced by his connexion to the woods. His work reflects the cycle of life and death, as much as fear and exaltation for mysterious phenomenons. For Bacchetti, the forest is a place of synthesis, bringing together the reality and the dream.
‘There is another sky’ presents a selection of paintings by Ariele Bacchetti.

Karamakate, a powerful Amazonian shaman, the last survivor of his people, lives isolated in the depths of the jungle. Dozens of years of loneliness have made him a chullachaqui, a human devoid of memories and emotions. His life is turned upside down by the arrival of Evans, an American ethnobotanist in search of yakruna, a very powerful sacred plant with the virtue of learning to dream. Together, they embark on a journey to the heart of the Amazon rainforest in which past, present and future merge, and which will allow Karamakate to gradually regain his lost memories.

Once upon a time ... a young princess manhandled by the queen, her stepmother, jealous of her beauty. Forced to flee into the forest, Snow White lost her way and found herself in the cottage inhabited by seven dwarves: Grumpy, Dopey, Doc, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy and Sleepy. Soon after, the queen, questioning her magic mirror, learned that Snow White was still alive. Mad with rage, the queen immediately set out to find him in the form of an old woman who would offer him a ... poisoned apple.
The march of his soldiers being thwarted by multiple perils, Pizzaro, the conqueror of Peru, entrusts a group of about forty men - under the leadership of Pedro de Ursua, assisted by don Lope de Aguirre - the task of descending the river in order to recognize the terrain. Very quickly, Aguirre revolts against Ursua, whom he wounds with a shot. Rejecting the authority of Spain, free and rebellious, Aguirre then leads his companions to this mythical Eldorado which has made them all dream for so long. He took it into his head to carve out an empire around the fabulous city of gold and to found a dynasty there.

Ten weeks of scouting, 18 weeks of filming, 3 times circling the earth in 15 months ... that's what it took Sophie Bruneau and Marc-Antoine Roudil to make the film Trees.
Arbres is a story of the Tree and of trees in general. It begins with the Origins then travels through the world of trees and the trees of the world. The film tells about the big differences and the small similarities between Tree and Man with the powerful idea that the tree is to the plant kingdom what man is to the animal kingdom. Arbres is a journey on another scale of space and time where we meet trees that communicate, trees that walk, timid trees or crazy trees ... Arbres overturns some received ideas by starting from the observation that we always see the animal running on the branch but never the tree on which it is moving.
While resting under a tree, Alice sees a white rabbit passing by, shouting "I'm late". Curious, she follows him and falls into a well. She finds herself in a strange world where various creatures come together, some funny, others terrifying, like the Queen of Hearts who cuts off everyone's heads.

“Eating the forest”: an immersive culinary experience at the heart of the forest.
The forest is a source of inspiration as much as it is revealed to us when we find its ingredients on our plates.let's eat what the forest has to offer, let's tell what we eat. This immersion time will allow us to uncover the secret of its unique ecosystem. From it's surface to its depths, we will learn to look at it better and understand those who inhabit it. Let's eat the forest ans grasp our inner forest.
Perrine Bettin: Culinary designer, and originally from Chamonix, Perrine creates meaningful links between what we eat and what we say. The practice of food design allows him to create unique experiences across the food spectrum, all in poetry and technicality. She is not a chef (fe) but works with them in order to carry out new scenarios of tasting, consumption and attention to the world around us. From the ground to the plate, from the story to the gesture, Eating is a way of "being in the world".

On the left bank of the Arveyron, ancient blocks of granite recall the memory of these Piedmont workers who brought their often unrecognized skills to our valley. Some of these boulders have marked the history of Chamonix. We know the Orthaz Stone, but do we know what it says? A little further, a nice walk takes us to a small forest path. Here were ancient granite quarries where nearly 300 workers worked for 80 years. It is a moving place, like an open-air book. From place to place we discover the various phases of the work that these men provided. Then by the old ways of servitude we seek what these workers left as a mark of their crafty skills.

Wind and vibration week
Wind is understood as the vibrations it creates when it hits a surface and then produces sound. These sounds can turn into music, which we will try to reproduce by making multiple instruments, whether with materials in the forest or also from recyclable items from the house. We will discover the octaves with the strings, or with percussion, or with our lungs and our voices that the air allows to breathe and make us sing. The echo is fun to learn too, as well as learning how to give the distress message in Morse code, in the event of an incident. Codes will be created and initiate conversations to solve puzzles of a great treasure hunt.

Discover the exhibitions of the Artocène festival by following the curators through the city. An opportunity to learn about the work of the artists and their approach to the theme of the forest.
• Artocène festival
On the iconic site of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Artocène brings together architecture and contemporary art to create a dialogue with the alpine landscape, symbol of a fragile and moving nature.
Etymologically Artocène would refer to «the age of art». It intends to offer a counterpoint to the term ‘Anthropocene’, defining the new geological era in which we have entered, caused by human activity.
The festival aims to show how art and culture can make our contemporaries aware of the environmental issues that we encounter, but also suggest alternatives or solutions.
The term Artocène also alludes to the idea of sharing around art – cène meaning supper, in order to connect with local, regional and international communities.
Edition 2021: Inner Forest
Entitled Inner Forest, this first edition of Artocène explores the theme of the enchanted forest through a contemporary perspective. Several venues throughout town are hosting exhibitions, film screenings, immersive forest walks, children‘s activities, and more.

• To see in Chamonix:
Mural Le Mont Analogue by Antoine Carbonne
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Chamonix Guide Company, Antoine Carbonne has been selected to create a monumental mural in the heart of the city.
Antoine Carbonne's fresco project is inspired by a novel by René Daumal, Le Mont Analogue. It is his last unfinished novel, written between 1939 and the death of its author in 1944.
The work presents the mountain as a link between our earthly reality and the infinite sky - a metaphor for a higher elsewhere - and imagines an ascent where the guides take on the appearance of true spiritual masters, like guardians of the sacred mountain.
The proposed painting tends to imagine this ancestry and offers a continuation of the story while paying tribute to the guides.
Urban paintings by Renaud Behar across the city
Renaud Behar's idea is to spread the spirit of the forest, of nature; the trees, the branches, the leaves, grow on the urban and social ground.
With an impressionistic and unrealistic instinct, Renaud undertakes a fascinating and unlimited study of trees and plants, leaves and branches. According to him: "the gaze is sometimes lost in complexity but is always found in harmony".
The artist uses public space as a backdrop to his creation. His work highlights the link between nature and the spaces occupied by men throughout the Chamonix valley.

Laetitia de Chocqueuse

Paulina Michnowska (b. 1984 Italy; lives and works in London)

• Sophie Bruneau, Marc-Antoine Roudil - Arbres
followed by a conversation with the movie director
09/05 at 6:00 PM VF
